Frequently Asked Questions
What type of products can be treated with Lyras Raslysation technology?
Lyras Raslysation systems are designed to treat liquids ranging from high to low transparency. We are specialized in the treatment of liquid foods, e.g. milk, plant-based drinks and juice, but we are also experienced with treating non-food liquids.
How do you know if Lyras has the right solution for your specific products?
If you are in doubt about whether your product is suitable for Raslysation UV-treatment, please do not hesitate to contact us! We do offer testing of your products at your production facility.
Why are almost all liquid food products pasteurized?
Pasteurization is used to inactivate bacteria within easily perishable foods and thereby preserving them for long periods without significant change in taste. Today, almost all liquid foods are pasteurized for this specific reason – and over the past 150 years it has saved millions of lives. However, the method of pasteurization hasn’t changed significantly since the invention by the French chemist Louis Pasteur, back in 1864. You can read more about the difference between Lyras’ groundbreaking Raslysation solution and conventional pasteurization in the following section.
What is the difference between Raslysation and Conventional pasteurization equipment?
Raslysation is a green alternative to the traditional pasteurization process. With this process, we use UV-lamps to generate a disinfecting light. The Raslysation system has patented integrated light filters, which only allows for the desired wavelengths to pass through, and these inactivate spores and bacteria more effectively than conventional pasteurization has ever been able to in e.g. milk. Furthermore, the product treated maintain a higher quality due to the gentler treatment, as the energy input is only 0,02% compared to conventionally pasteurized product. The product is only treated a few seconds and it stays chilled while undergoing the short treatment. Thus, maintaining its natural taste and composition meanwhile nutritional values are retained, as vitamins and proteins go unharmed.
The conventional way to pasteurize liquid foods is done by heating and cooling the fluid in rapid succession to a minimum of 72 degrees for 15-45 seconds. This process ensures the safety of the product but uses a vast amount of energy and is time consuming.
Does Raslysation comply with food safety requirements?
YES! Our systems meet all the food safety requirements. Apart from fulfilling all the requirements, there is also other benefits, as Raslysation relies on UV-light rather than heat, no particles burn to the surface, thereby reducing the need for cleaning and use of chemicals.
What are the benefits of Raslysation?
With Lyras’ new and patented Raslysation system comes many benefits including: higher quality, energy efficiency, a more sustainable pasteurization, extended shelf life and much more, which you can read about through the following link: Technology
Why is UV-light not traditionally used for pasteurizing?
The main challenge in using UV-light, is the transparency of the product. The reason why transparency poses a challenge, is that all the bacteria present in the fluid, must come into contact with the UV-light, for it to be inactivated. A product with low transparancy, such as milk is therefore harder to treat, than for example a see-through liquid such as water.
We at Lyras however have solved this challenge with a new and patented system. Lyras Raslysation technology uses UV-lamps to generate a disinfecting light. The Raslysation system has integrated light filters, which removes unnecessary wavelengths, and thereby we maintain a high product quality meanwhile inactivating bacteria and spores. Furthermore, the unique design geometry creates a turbulent flow, to ensure the entire volume of liquid is exposed to the UV-light. This Raslysation technique eliminates the traditional challenges to UV-pasteurization, meanwhile being a greener and more energy efficient way of pasteurizing.
With this Raslysation technique Lyras can pasteurize various products with different viscosity and transparency levels, such as following: Milk, juice, wine, mixers, soda, brine, process water, non-food liquids, plant-based milk, whey, cheese and more.
Is Raslysation environment friendly?
YES! Lyras’ Raslysation technology allows for an energy efficient solution, that reduces the energy consumption by 60-90%. Furthermore, the technology enables a production that excludes water almost entirely and hereby eliminates unnecessary water waste.
Conventionally fossils fuels are used in pasteurization processes, which has a negative impact on the global carbon footprint. However, Lyras’ Raslysation technology only uses electricity and hereby leads to a greener production that has the potential to run solely on renewable energy. Thereby, Lyras’ Raslysation technology affects the planet favorably as the solution ensures sustainable production patterns with a lower carbon footprint than conventional pasteurization.
FAQ Technical
What is the maximum capacity?
What are the service costs (What is the price of one UV lamp)?
The costs of service will vary depending on your setup, we can however say that with one of our affordable service contracts you will not run into any unexpected costs. We will assure that the annual service check is performed following all standards and all wearing parts, such as lamps and coils will be replaced.
What is the price of a unit?
This is a highly complex question since the cost of the units vary greatly depending on the size of the system, the sensitivity of your product and much more. Do feel free to contact our sales team to get a price estimate for your production at: [email protected]
Is it possible to rent a unit?
Yes, we do have the possibility of doing leasing agreements, please reach out to our sales team to hear more at: [email protected]
Is it possible to do a test batch?
What types of products can be treated by cold pasteurization?
Generally, we say that any liquid food can be cold pasteurized, and it is done faster, gentler and more efficiently than other solutions do it. We have even been treating liquids such as soaps and balsams.
Foods include: Milk, juices, kambucha, wine, brines, blood plasma and many more.
As the milk pasteurized by Lyras does not have heat, will the consumer think they are drinking RAW milk - any consumer resistance?
The consumer will not think that they are drinking raw milk, but the product will have a taste that bears a resemblance to raw milk. Of course, we cannot say that everyone will like the product better, but there has been no resistance towards the minute changes in taste.
Is any additional heat needed besides your treatment?
The process of cold pasteurization does not require any heating, water or cooling to treat the products to HTST standards.
How is the equipment cleaned? With a standard CIP cleaning procedure?
Does CPS result in any food safety concerns?
No! there are no food safety concerns. Our solution is hygienically designed with certified food-grade materials and no glass-food contact surfaces. Furthermore, our solution meets the highest safety standards and HACCP requirements.
Can CPS replace HPP?
In most cases, Yes! Infact with CPS you could process your liquid food at a fraction of the cost compared to HPP. If you would like to hear if CPS is an optimal solution for you, please reach out to our sales department at [email protected]
